Statistics show that 1 in 4 women will be a victim of a violent crime. Watching the news and reading the papers, it may be easy to live under the assumption that violence happens somewhere away from you; that you will never come face to face with it. You live your live inside of certain parameters; and thus you are so familiar with your surroundings that you have a perception of safety. You know right where everything is and how to get to it. This may seem like a good thing, but it actually steals your safety to be this comfortable.
If you are reading this; you have come to the point where you understand there is a need for self defense. This is not a difficult conclusion to come to when you are surrounded by stories of attacks on girls and boys both. Chances are you would need more than your two hands to count the number of crimes or attempted crimes just in your area this week. So yes, you need to learn self defense in order to keep yourself out of harms way; and able to fight it off should it come to you.
There are several ways that you can learn the effective military self defense techniques designed to send an assailant to the ground. Some people take a one-time rape clinic class. While these are great; they cannot substitute for ongoing training. You didn’t learn to read by sitting down with one book. No, you read book after book after book. You started with something easy like See Spot Run and you moved on to more difficult Dr. Seuss books. As you grew, you learned to read bigger words and now you can read just about anything.
The methods are the same when you learn to protect yourself against violence. There are small chunks that you learn as you slowly put together a puzzle and upon completion you have a full wall of protection through tactics like hand to hand combat training comprised of different martial arts moves.
How you learn is up to you. You can join an ongoing class or you can pick up a martial arts DVD at the store. A mixture of both gives you ample instruction as well as plenty of practice help. The goal is to find a training program that is focused and all inclusive of the entire self defense lifestyle.
